White Oak

Quercus alba
This native tree is one of the most prominent hardwood trees in our area. When grown in the open, it is magnificent in its height, (80-100 ft.) and wide canopy of branches that spread out at large angles.  It is also a long-lived tree lasting typically 200-300 years, and some specimens live greater than 450 years. The name comes from the white wood which has a close cellular structure making it water and rot resistant.  These characteristics also makes the wood great for aging wine.  By regulation, bourbon must be aged in charred new oak barrels. This particular white oak is the largest tree in our Arboretum, measuring 4 ft. 6 inches in diameter.  Oak trees play a prominent role in the history of Glendale.  The Oaks Mansion off Albion Avenue was the name of one of the Proctor's homes.  Although the homes that were in the area are now gone, you can still see some of the presumably original white oaks off Albion Lane.
