White Fringetree

Chionanthus virginicus

This is the native equivalent of the Chinese fringe tree (Chioanthus retusus) and is more prevalent in the southeastern United States, but also grows in Ohio. It is a small tree or large shrub with multiple trunks. Like its Chinese cousin they have large white fragrant flowers which hang down in cascades and bloom in late May. Since it is in the same family as ash trees, emerald ash borer has been seen in fringe trees in Ohio.
