Schubert Chokecherry
The chokeberry is a native plant that grows well in full to partial sun. It can attain heights of 20-30 ft., and the smaller ones are considered large shrubs. The fragrant, white flowers evolve into dark purple fruit in late summer. The fruit is edible but has a very astringent taste, which is probably how the plant derived itschokecherry name. It does make a tasty jelly or syrup with the addition of sugar or honey. However, wildlife isn’t particular and is attracted to the unaltered fruit. TheSchubert cultivar is very popular as a landscape plant. Its leaves start out green in the spring, then change to an attractive purple color in late summer and then turn orange-red in the fall.
