Red Maple

Acer rubrum
The tree is also called swamp, water or soft maple.  It is the most common deciduous (looses leaves) tree in the eastern and mid-west United States. As its name implies, it is particularly noted for its dark red fall foliage.  Because of its varied root system,  the tree is very adaptable and can grow in swamps and dry soil, reaching heights of 50-80 ft. and spreads of 30-50 ft.  Its growth rate is slower  than silver maples but faster than sugar maples.  Red maples are one of the earliesttrees to flower in the spring and produce the smallest seed of any maple.  Of interest, the leaves are very toxic to horses.
