Princeton American Elm

Ulmus americana
The stately, beautiful vase-shaped American elm of bygone years has been practically extinguished in this country by the Dutch elm disease.  However, in 1922 in Princeton, New Jersey, a cultivar was developed which has excellent but not  total resistance to the Dutch elm disease. This cultivar also tolerates conditionsof the urban environment. It is fast growing, reaching heights of       50-70 ft.  Therefore, these trees are being introduced into the American landscape as lawn and street trees.  It is appropriate that Glendale has a  Princeton elm in the Village Square, since Glendale is part of the Princeton School District.
