Paperbark Maple

Acer griseum
This maple tree is a native of China and was introduced to our country in the early 20th century.  It grows well in full to part sun to a height of 20-30 ft., and spread of 10-20 ft.  However, what makes this tree so interesting is the paper-thin bark which exfoliates but still stays attached to the branches revealing its rose-brown inner bark. Another characteristic is the brilliant fall foliage of pink, red and orange. The state champion is located in Spring Grove Cemetery.
