Northern Red Oak

Quercus rubra
This native oak tree is a fairly rapid grower and under good soil conditions and full sun it can attain heights of 70-80 ft.  Like many oaks it has a long-life span, living up to 400 years. Red oaks are distinctive for their brilliant red fall foliage.  It also stands out from other oaks by its shiny stripes going down the trunk bark. For these reasons, it is a great landscape tree and can be seen in many yards throughout the Village.  The wood is commonly used in flooring and furniture. Unfortunately, as are many oaks in the red oak family, these trees are more susceptible to plant pests and pathogens.
