Kentucky Coffeetree

Gymnocladus dioicus
This native tree is noted for its massive compound leaf (many small leaflets on a stem). The leaves can reach lengths of 1-3 ft. and widths of 2 ft. These large leaves drop early in the fall so the tree is bare for 6 months of the year. It grows well in poor soils and is drought, insect and air pollution resistant. This probably explains its popularity in landscape and street plantings.  An interesting fact is the early settlers roasted the seeds as a coffee substitute. But if you decide to use this for your cup of Joe, make sure the seeds are completely roasted since the unroasted seeds are toxic.
