European Beech

Fagus sylvatica
This tree is native to much of Europe. It was introduced to America as primarily an ornamental and shade tree. The spreading canopy, dropped hanging branches and smooth bark add landscape interest throughout the year. This tree can also be shaped like a hedge.  European beeches grow faster than their American cousin Fagus grandifolia, and their leaves have less teeth on the edges. At maturity they can attain heights of 82-115 ft. and have a lifespan of 150 -200 years. They like full sun and well-drained, moist soil. There are many cultivars of the European beech which you can see throughout the Arboretum.
