Eastern White Pine

Pinus strobus
Although this evergreen tree is native to Ohio, it prefers the sandy soil of northeastern Ohio to the clay soils of Cincinnati. These fast-growing, straight-trunked trees can reach heights of 80-120 ft.  The tree has the distinction of being the tallest tree species in the eastern United States. Mature trees can live up to 250 years. It is a good year-round barrier tree to plant on your property as long as there is full to partial sun and well-drained soil. There are some good representative young white pines in Floral Park. You can tell the eastern pine from other pines since the needles occur in bunches of 5. The tree forms whorls of lateral branches from its straight trunk, which are about 1-2 feet apart. To determine the approximate age of a younger tree, just count these whorls of branches from top to bottom. If you don't see the white pine in nature, you can always see them as telephone poles, Christmas trees and the woodpulp for the books and papers we read.
