Eastern Redbud

Cercis canadensis
The beautiful light-to-dark magenta buds that bloom in early spring make this tree a true show stopper. The buds grow not only on the twigs but on the tree trunk  before the leaves come out, contributing to its uniqueness. The heart-shaped leaves turn bright yellow in the fall adding to the tree's appeal. The trunk divides close to the ground which, as the tree ages, creates very interesting and artistic trunk and limb shapes that are particularly visible in the winter.  It tolerates most soil types and can grow to 20 ft. tall and 25 ft. wide.  Drive around Glendale in the spring, and you can see its appearance in landscaping. It is a great understory tree in wooded areas.
