Cucumbertree Magnolia

Magnolia acuminata
This native tree is the most common magnolia seen in Ohio forests.  It is one of the hardiest and cold tolerant of the magnolias.  The leaves which are deciduous (fall off) are oval and downy on the underside.  The flowers are not particularly showy but they do produce a fruit that looks like a cucumber, hence its common name. The national champion and presumed world champion, 96 ft. tall and 7 ft. trunk diameter, is in Stark County, Canton, Ohio area.  A mature tree can normally attain heights of 60-80 ft.
