Bur Oak

Quercus macrocarpa
This slow-growing native oak is one of the most massive trees seen in Ohio. Macrocarpa is derived from the Greek word for large. It is in the white oak family and grows 70-90 ft. tall and can live 200-300 years.  They grow well at the forest edge in full sun. Their long tap root makes them more drought resistant.  The large acorns have a frilly looking cap which covers half the acorn. This acorn feature is why it is also called mossy cup oak. These acorns are produced in such heavy abundance every few years that predators can't eat them all. The tree’s acorn production is a survival strategy called masting.
