Bracken's Brown Beauty Southern Magnolia

Magnolia grandiflora 'Bracken's Brown Beauty'
When we think of a typical magnolia, this species usually comes to mind.  It has large, shiny, dark green leaves and large (up to 12 inches wide) fragrant white flowers.  Although they are native to the southeast, the greater Cincinnati area is home to a sizeable population of the cold-hearty Bracken's Brown Beauty variety, which has smaller leaves that are typically leathery, dark green on top but brown underneath.  They do well in sheltered areas and can grow up to 30 ft. tall. This shade-tolerant tree is relatively pest free.  Although an evergreen, the large leaves turn yellowish brown and fall throughout the year.  Just drive through the Village, especially the older parts, and you can see some magnificent examples of this tree.
