Autumn Blaze®  Freeman Maple

Acer x freemanii 'Jeffersred'
This is a hybrid tree developed in 1933 by Oliver M. Freeman of the United States National Arboretum. In general, hybrids are a combination of desired characteristics of different species.  For the Freeman Maple this combination wasthe fast growth rate of the silver maple and the red leaves of the red maple.  From the Freeman Maple other cultivars were developed  for more brilliant colors and stronger limb attachments. The Autumn Blaze is one popular cultivar. The Freeman Maple and many of its cultivars can grow to heights of 45-60 ft. and are tolerant of drought and clay soils. However, its main attraction is the brilliant orange-red fall foliage that makes it a popular landscape and street tree.
